A lifelong love of sewing and textiles—passed down from a mother who sewed professionally—forms the foundation of Minneapolis-based artist, Rya Priede. Now a picture framer with a home studio, she brings that sensibility to a unique blend of image, text, and thread.

Several years ago, she discovered the Big Little Book series—small, 3x3-inch children’s books published from the 1930s to the 1960s. She was drawn to both the illustrations and the story captions, which—when taken out of context and viewed through a feminist lens—become unexpectedly witty, sometimes subversive, and always smile-inducing. Each book page is scanned, enlarged, and mounted on linen to create a strong enough surface for embroidery.

Culinary Workshop: Cheesemaking with Taylor Hartson

Goat's milk cheese has been a staple in households around the world for centuries. Every region has its own style of making goat cheese that highlights the distinctive features of where the cheese is produced — from the bloomy rinds of the Loire Valley to the experimental and inventive wheels of new American artisan cheesemakers.

In this class, Taylor Hartson, a farmstead cheesemaker at Verdant Hollow Farms, will teach us how to make four kinds of cheese from a simple lactic goat's milk curd, just by tweaking the cultures, the shape, and the aging style. We'll talk about how to select and source ingredients for cheesemaking, demonstrate the key steps of the process, and, of course, taste a variety of goat's milk cheese produced right here in southwest Michigan.
