Pie Dough Elephant Ears

Invariably there are scraps left when rolling out dough for your favorite pie. Ball them up, and as Tamar Adler says, "charitably hand to the youngest person in the household, who can choose whether to twist or braid it" into a sweet, golden brown treat.

Ingredients

leftover pie dough and pastry scraps
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon or 5 spice
big pinch of salt
olive oil

Method

  1. Heat oven to 350F
  2. Roll, twist, or braid the pastry scraps and chill for 20 minutes to reset the butter
  3. In a bowl combine the sugar, spices and salt
  4. Take the shapes from the fridge, brush with olive oil, sprinkle liberally with the sugar mixture
  5. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 10-20 minutes depending on the thickness of the shape
