Potato and Pea Hand Pies

Inspired by the classic Indian snack, aloo samosa, these hand pies are great as an appetizer or as a part of a lunch.

Ingredients

2 lbs golden potatoes, peeled and boiled until tender
1 cup shelling peas
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground coriander
1/2 tsp cumin seed
1 tsp garam masala or other curry mixture
1/2 tsp chili flakes or 1 fresh chili, minced
1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and minced
10 sprigs cilantro, roughly chopped
1 ball pie dough
1 tsp cumin seed (optional)

Method

  1. In a medium sized bowl combine the cooked potatoes and peas and gently mash
  2. In a small frying pan heat a big glug of coconut or neutral oil and fry the spices and ginger until fragrant
  3. Pour the spice mixture over the potato mixture, add the chopped cilantro and stir to combine
  4. Roll out the pie dough and sprinkle the additional cumin seed over the dough and roll to embed in the dough
  5. Cut into 4 inch rounds and re roll the scrap one time cutting additional rounds
  6. Fill each round with 1/4 cup of the potato filling and fold over to make half moons
  7. Seal each round using a fork to crimp the edges
  8. Chill at least 30 minutes or freeze
  9. To bake, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt then bake at 350F until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through, about 25-30 minutes
  10. Serve warm or room temperature
